IT'S KWANZAA!!

Kwanzaa Dates (2011 of the following dates)
Dec. 26-Jan. 1

This year, the African American holiday celebrated from December 26 to January 1. It is estimated that some 18 million African Americans take part in Kwanzaa.

Kwanzaa is not a religious holiday, nor is it meant to replace Christmas. It was created by a professor of Black Studies, in 1966 who sought to design a celebration that would honor the values of ancient African cultures and inspire African Americans who were working for progress.

The Seven Principles (Nguzo Saba)
Each of the seven days of Kwanzaa honors a different principle. These principles are believed to have been key to building strong, productive families and communities in Africa. During Kwanzaa, celebrants greet each other with "Habari gani," or "What's the news?" The principles of Kwanzaa form the answers.

The Principles of Kwanzaa
umoja (oo-MOH-ja)
Meaning: unity
Action: building a community that holds together
kujichagulia (koo-jee-cha-goo-LEE-yah)
Meaning: self-determination
Action: speaking for yourself and making choices that benefit the community
ujima (oo-JEE-mah)
Meaning: collective work and responsibility
Action: helping others within the community
ujamaa (oo-JAH-ma)
Meaning: cooperative economics
Action: supporting businesses that care about the community
nia (nee-AH)
Meaning: a sense of purpose
Action: setting goals that benefit the community
kuumba (koo-OOM-bah)
Meaning: creativity
Action: making the community better and more beautiful
imani (ee-MAH-nee)
Meaning: faith
Action: believing that a better world can be created for communities now and in the future

Families gather for the great feast of karamu on December 31. Karamu may be held at a home, community center, or church. Celebrants enjoy traditional African dishes as well as those featuring ingredients Africans brought to the United States, such as sesame seeds (benne), peanuts (groundnuts), sweet potatoes, collard greens, and spicy sauces.

Colorful Celebrations
Celebrants decorate with red~for the blood that is shed in the struggle for freedom, black~for the color of the people, and green~for the fertile land of Africa, as well as African-style textiles and art. At the heart of Kwanzaa imagery, however, are the seven symbols.

The Seven Symbols of Kwanzaa
kikombe cha umoja
Meaning: the unity cup
Action: Celebrants drink from this cup in honor of their African ancestors. Before drinking, each person says "harambee," or "let's pull together."
kinara
Meaning: the candleholder, which holds seven candles
Action: It said to symbolize stalks of corn that branch off to form new stalks, much as the human family is created.
mazao
Meaning: fruits, nuts, and vegetables
Action: These remind celebrants of the harvest fruits that nourished the people of Africa.
mishumaa saba
Meaning: the seven candles that represent the seven principles
Action: A different candle is lit each day. Three candles on the left are green; three on the right are red; and in the middle is a black candle.
mkeka
Meaning: mat
Action: The symbols of Kwanzaa are arranged on the mkeka, which may be made of straw or African cloth. It symbolizes the foundation upon which communities are built.
vibunzi (plural, muhindi)
Meaning: ear of corn
Action: Traditionally, one ear of corn is placed on the mkeka for each child present.
zawadi
Meaning: gifts
Action: Traditionally, educational and cultural gifts are given to children on January 1, the last day of Kwanzaa.

Hanukkah, the "Festival of Lights," starts on the 25th day of the Jewish calendar month of Kislev and lasts for eight days and nights. This year, Hanukkah begins at sundown on December 20th. With blessings, games, and festive foods, Hanukkah celebrates the triumphs--both religious and military--of ancient Jewish heroes.

Hanukkah is a relatively minor holiday in the Jewish year. In the United States, however, its closeness to Christmas has brought greater attention to Hanukkah and its gift-giving tradition. Amid the ever-growing flood of Christmas advertising, it may seem especially fitting that the Hanukkah story tells of Jewish culture surviving in a non-Jewish world.

The Menorah:
The menorah symbolizes the burning light in the temple, as well as marking the eight days of the Hanukkah festival. The lighting of the menorah, known in Hebrew as the hanukiya, is the most important Hanukkah tradition. A menorah is a candlestand with nine branches. Usually eight candles - one for each day of Hanukka - are of the same height, with a taller one in the middle, the shamash ("servant"), which is used to light the others. Each evening of Hanukkah, one more candle is lit, with a special blessing.

The Dreidel:
Long a favorite Hanukkah toy, the dreidel once had a serious purpose. When the Syrians forbid study of the Torah, Jews who studied in secret kept spinning tops "sivivons, or dreidels"on hand. This way, if they were found studying, they could quickly pretend that they had only been playing. The Hebrew letters also represent Yiddish words that tell how to play the dreidel game. Each player starts with the same amount of candies, chocolate coins (gelt), or other tokens, and puts one in a pot. Players take turns spinning the dreidel, waiting to see which letter lands face up. Nun is for "nisht," do nothing. Gimel is for "gants," take the whole pot. Hay is for "halb," take half. Shin is for "shtel," add to the pot. The game ends when a single player wins all the tokens.

Hanukkah Foods:
Many traditional Hanukkah foods are cooked in oil, in remembrance of the oil that burned in the temple. In the United States, the most widespread Hanukkah food is latkes, or potato pancakes, a custom that may have developed in Eastern Europe. In Israel, the favorite Hanukkah food is sufganiya, a kind of jelly donut cooked in oil. Israelis eat sufganiyot for more than a month before the start of Hanukkah. Eating dairy products, especially cheese, is another Hanukkah tradition. This is done in memory of the Jewish heroine Judith, who according to legend saved her village from Syrian attackers. Judith fed wine and cheese to the Syrian general Holofernes until he became so drunk that he fell to the ground. She then seized his sword and cut off his head, which she brought back to her village in a basket. The next morning, Syrian troops found the headless body of their leader and fled in terror.

WHY NOT A CHRISTMAS WEDDING?

It's the most wonderful time of the year, your family is gathered around you, and the church is already decorated. Here are a few design tips to have a fantastic Christmas wedding with all the trimmings.

Red and green are natural colors for a Christmas wedding – It is likely that your church or reception site will already be decorated in red and green for other events and holiday parties. But don't feel limited to this palate. Other possibilities, which will work with existing decorations, include:
•silver and white
•silver and variations of blue
•burgundy, forest green, and gold
•cream and gold

You're Invited:

For Christmas wedding invitations you'll want to reflect the season and your theme, but you won't want it to look like a holiday card. Forgo a folded card, opting for the traditional thick white card, with a border and engraved or graphed text. You can highlight the Christmas wedding theme in the border with white snowflakes, an elegant holly trim, or a drawing of a poinsettia.
Since people make plans for the holidays early, and often have many parties and events to attend at this time of year, you'll want to send your invitations a little bit early – about 12 weeks before the event. You'll definitely want to consider "save the date" cards in addition to the invitations, which will ensure that those most important to you will be able to attend.

And The Bride Wore...

A Christmas wedding dress needn't be that different from any other kind. Wear the one that flatters you most, and top it off with a long red velvet cape. Or embrace the trend of color in wedding dresses by adding a beautiful red silk sash to the waist of your gown. You could also seek a dress with lots of sparkly beads and sequins to evoke the snowiness of the season. And of course, a faux-fur wrap and muff are always fun.

Bridesmaids Attire

VERY popular bridesmaid look for a Christmas wedding is long dresses with shrugs or capelets and a big faux-fur muff. But you can dress them in your wedding colors, give them long wraps or sparkly accessories, all of which will help evoke your theme

Since flowers can be more expensive at this time of year, think creatively. A mirrored platter with pillar candles and sprigs of holly is both elegant and romantic. Buy ornaments in bulk on-line, and create centerpieces of bowls or vases of ornaments. For a simple but elegant look, put pots of poinsettia with a ribbon trim in the center of each table.

Fake snow used to be tacky, but there are now very good products available. Set candles or small flower arrangements in the middle of snow. And for my favorite touch, use fake snow instead of an aisle runner. Or, you can always hire a snow-making machine to really make your Christmas wedding a winter wonderland.

Have Your Cake
Having each tier look like an individually wrapped package is a popular look that is perfect for a Christmas wedding. You might also do a take on a buche noel or yule log, with a tiered chocolate cake that has holly – either real or made of gum paste – cascading down the side. Use marzipan, an almond paste used in many holiday desserts, as a filling.

It's not even December, but the holiday commercial rotation is already filling itself out quite nicely, and right behind the chart-topping scourge of electronics and toys are the ads for diamond merchants like Kay, Jared and Zales, to name a few, all of which have decided that the best way for a man to celebrate the season is to put a sparkly ring on his intended's finger.

Christmas is the second most popular day of the year to get engaged, second only to Valentine’s Day on the number of people who get engaged on that date every year. Marriage proposals are special anytime of the year and whenever they occur. Receiving a diamond engagement ring from the love of her life is a very exciting and wonderful experience for a woman.

Congratulations to Tuverla & Michael Livingston, who were married on 5/15/2011.

The 1840's Ballroom, located in the iron-fronted Fava Building in historic Jonestown’s 1840's provided a stunning backdrop for this historically themed nuptial celebration.

A beautiful ceremony, with sweeping panoramic views of the Baltimore Inner Harbor and surrounding areas; filled with fabulous florals & eye catching crystals, accompanied by a silk draped canopy, a soloist and 115 guests sharing in this nuptial celebration.

A cocktail hour, on the 2nd floor, City Lites boasted a fun lounge-like atmosphere complete with overstuffed couches and a centerpiece attraction when the building housed the
Baltimore City Life Museums.

The reception, on the spacious fourth floor, overlooked a landscaped garden courtyard and guest tables were named for various contributors of the cultural era. With the backdrop of elegant chandeliers, custom draperies, a mahogany and stained glass bar and hand-painted murals of historic Baltimore, the guest sipped and danced the night away.

For the past seven years, the Baltimore Chapter of NACE has hosted UNCORKED!, a remarkable wine dinner and table design competition. The fundraiser brings together members of the event industry and the community at large for an evening of fine cuisine, wine, décor, a silent auction, and entertainment, and its success on all levels has garnered multiple awards, setting the bar for fundraising events throughout the nation. UNCORKED! proceeds benefit the Foundation of NACE, the Baltimore Chapter of NACE, and Meals on Wheels.

Cocktail Hour: The evening began on the first floor of AVAM’s Jim Rouse Building with an hour of specialty drinks & hors d’oeuvres, entertainment, theme-inspired décor, and a fabulous silent auction!

Dinner: An incredible 3-course dinner prepared by some of the area’s best chefs, paired with wine, and set amidst an array of incredibly designed tables on the third floor of the Jim Rouse Building.

Table Design Competition: Guests were able to vote on their favorite table design as the winner of the People’s Choice Award, and a panel of guest judges determined which tables would hail as winners of the awards for Most Creative, Best Interpretation, and Best Overall. The theme for UNCORKED! 2011 was “A Night of MYSTERY,” and all aspects of the event were reflected the motif. The evening will also incorporate an extensive silent auction and highlight the creative talents of members with an extravagant table design competition.

There are varying opinions as to the origin of Valentine's Day. Some experts state that it originated from St. Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. He died on February 14, 269 A.D., the same day that had been devoted to love lotteries. Legend also says that St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer's daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it "From Your Valentine". Other aspects of the story say that Saint Valentine served as a priest at the temple during the reign of Emperor Claudius. Claudius then had Valentine jailed for defying him. In 496 A.D. Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 to honour St. Valentine.

That note started the custom of exchanging love messages on Valentine's Day. It was written on the day Valentine died, February 14, 269 A.D. Now, every year on this day, people remember. But most importantly, they think about love and friendship.

So, you've made it official, Congratulations! Believe it or not, more couples become engaged during the Christmas holiday season than any other time of the year. So if he uttered those four famous words and you answered with "YES".....READ ON.

Many of my colleagues have already passed this savvy tidbit of advice on, via personal blogs and Facebook pages however, it bears repeating as it's one of thee best pearls of wisdom to pass on:

ENJOY JUST BEING ENGAGED! Take a few weeks, maybe even a month, and enjoy your ring and your new fiance'; no talk of guest lists, dresses, colors, venues, you get the idea. You'll have time for that SOON ENOUGH. Too often I hear from couples, "I just want to get it over with." and brides end up walking the road of planning alone. In fact, I spend more time with the brides than their grooms. If you apply this snippet of advice, the path to planning will be a lot smoother and your groom may be willing to become more involved.

MASQUERADE BALL

Our last event for the 2010 event season has come & gone, this past Saturday, and if I must say so myself....we went out in "Spectacular Style". We took to the road, for our corporate client's in West Virginia, and once again that road led us to Hagerstown, MD.

The Hagerstown Hotel & Conference Center was a gracious host, to the Affairs Remembered Team. Guests totally immersed themselves into this themed event~ upon entrance, guests selected a mask and beads of their choice. During the cocktail hour, everyone received a crash course in Ballroom Dancing, the test was administered during the event itself, and there were various other "specialty artists", to satisfy the most persnickety of entertainment tastes.

During the main event guests found themselves engulfed in rich tones of Gold, Purple, Teal & Fuschia, accented by feathers-feathers EVERYWHERE! Guests danced to a varity of tunes, belted out by a live jazz band and yes even the "Ballroom Dance" test. For an entire evening, we listened to "ohhh's and awwww's" over the design elements of this event and just like the fire works, to ring in the new year, we knew that our 2010 event season went out with a BANG!!
2010 has been both a busy and an eventful season for me but it's been a blessing and I've managed to orchestrate a successful event each time, even during my pregnancy. I'm SO grateful and thankful to my Affairs Remembered Ladies!

During the month of October, international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities reach out to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention and cure. The campaign also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer.

As well as providing a platform for breast cancer charities to raise awareness of of the disease, BCAM, Breast Cancer Awarness Month, is also a prime opportunity to remind women to be breast aware for earlier detection.

While October is recognized as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we should stay encouraged to continue the fight year-round.

A NEW ADDITION!!

As an event designer, I run a tight ship. Schedules and timelines must be kept and details must be spelled out to the "T". We've all been there... we plan & plan & plan, only to have ONE little thing prick tiny holes in our planning bubble of joy.

Well, imagine my surprise when:

Eight days after my official maternity leave begins

Three weeks earlier than expected

My husband come home with tickets, for us to tour the White House, our plans are altered by THE STORK ~the night before the tour!

Affairs Remembered Event Management & Design , welcomes a new team member, our up & coming "New Muscle", Baby Green, arrived safely. I'm sure that he'll begin assisting Mommy & her design team, in no time.

I want to express my gratitude for the many forms of congratulatory wishes that we've received.

Maternity Hiatus

The time has finally come for me to begin my maternity leave. While, I have NO plans to drop out of the "spot light" entirely, (what Event Planner ever does) I still have events to produce and manage right up until the start of the new year, I will be visually absent during the calendar period of 08/11/2010-10/18/2010. During my physical absence, all voice mails and emails will continue to be answered and returned expeditiously. We will continue to accept new event/wedding requests, for the 2011 event season; however, initial consultations will not resume until 10/18/2010.

I feel most comfortable in knowing that my valued clients are being left in very capable & knowledgeable hands, with the staff of Affairs Remembered Event Management.

Shame on Me!

I've been such a bad Blogger these days! With progress meetings, scheduled events and tying loose ends, I haven't had much time to fulfill my blogging duties.

The work of an Event Planner/Designer is quite demanding but add to those duties, 34 weeks of pregnancy and you have yourself a huge task, no pun intended, ahead of you. Thank goodness my pregnancy has been a healthy, un-eventful one (if you don't count the two weddings that I managed to fall during or the pre-term labor that required a trip to the hospital following one of the falls) . I'm fortunate to have a wonderful team, that knows the TRUE meaning of devotedness, loyalty and devotion! We know what it's like and don't mind getting "down & dirty" for the business of event production.

As my official maternity leave date draws near, I must appease myself in knowing that all of those little last minute details, for up and coming events have been satisfied. Don't expect me to completely withdraw from the scene, I would go crazy...I'll still be in planner mode, just in a Charlie's Angels kinda way. I may even have more time to blog.....

A Twist of Lemon

Congratulations to Jaye & Wayne Johnson, who were married on 07/03/2010. This couple was a pleasure to work with and their chosen color palette, for the wedding and reception, allowed me to use my creativity.... making the design process a lot of fun!

These high school sweethearts exchanged vows in a quaint & cozy ceremony, at the Pier 5 Hotel in Baltimore's famous Inner Harbor. For the ceremony, we decided to use the softer side of the color focal point.... the aisle was created using rows of sheer, long stemmed callas and hundreds of custom lemon & crème shaded rose petals.

At the reception, guests were met by the trendier side of the color focal scheme, while the ballroom offered breath taking views of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. Centerpieces, composed of lemon yellow hydrangea & roses with crystal accents, sparkled like the night skyline of Downtown Baltimore. Outside, as they sipped drinks and enjoyed the sights & sounds of the Inner Harbor, guests were seated at tables with low centerpieces composed of lemon roses.

D.I.Y Tip #2

While D.I.Y'ing (I made that word up) is a great way to save money and put your creativity to the test, I must caution you about those "little-big things" that are almost always forgotten.

Once you accept the challange of planning your own wedding/event, there are a few bits of knowledge that you should arm yourself with:
First, DON'T ASSUME ANYTHING! (discussed in an earlier post)

Second, GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING & DON'T SIGN ANYTHING THAT IS NOT CLEAR TO YOU!

1. You've decided to take on the search for that perfect venue, yourself. You have some internet favorites and maybe a few suggestions from friends and family members... word of mouth, can sometimes be the best form of advertisement. You're sure that you're going to get the best deal because after all, they "hooked up" your family member or friend, right? I wouldn't count on it...make sure that you are clear about your expectations of the venue and it's staff; in turn, make sure that you are clear of what the venue expects of you. No matter how small the detail may seem, GET IT IN WRITING! For your cocktail hour, butler passed hor'd'oeuvres are discussed, make sure that this detail appears on the contract. If you have hired an outside wait & bar staff, make sure that both the caterer and the bar & wait staff is aware of their separate responsibilities. Don't leave your wedding or event day to chance. Many times, the person that we initially meet with, you know the one that makes us fall in love with this "Must Have" venue, it NOT the individual on staff during your event. Don't let the glam of the venue and your imagination, take over the reality of the situation. Go in with a clear head and take some time to step back, read proposals, ask questions and think clearly before signing yourself into a potential nightmare. You don't want a false sense of your contract, what's covered in the overall costs and what's not. What are the cancellation and or rescheduling policies? The day that your head count is due, is NOT the time to find out that your $10,000 did not cover food, drinks, etc.

2. Another word of mouth plug has led you to a florist. You take along pictures of what you absolutely must have, and the floral vendor tells you, "We can do this with no problem". Insist on viewing a mock set-up, to ensure that your floral pieces are what you expect. Now, there are times where a photograph cannot be replicated to the exact detail but you what to be comfortable in knowing that when you and your guests walk into your event, everyone is viewing the floral beauties that you've imagined for so long. Read and discuss contract verbiage, know what "fillers" are going to be used, what the vases will look like, what style and color will be used as an alternate vase (if needed) , if vases are a rental or yours to keep, the time and location of delivery....and this list could go on and on.

3. Chair Covers/Designer Chairs ~ your venue comes with the most awful looking chairs that you've ever seen or you've always dreamed of seeing specialty chairs for your event. While chair covers & sashes/chair pads are a beauty, installing them is also very time consuming. Be sure that you know and make your Day-Of -Professional aware of who is responsible for this task. If it's your Day-Of-Professional, make sure that your contract states that he/she is responsible for installing and removing the chair accents. If your venue is securing the chair accents, inquire if there is an additional fee to install and remove them and make sure it is listed in your agreement. You don't want to walk into your event, only to discover that your assumption about a detail ~ was just that.....

D.I.Y. Tip #1

First, DON'T ASSUME ANYTHING!

1. So, one of your girlfriend's, that loves to bake and is usually pretty good, has offered to make your wedding cake as a gift. WOW, what a great way to save and to ensure that the cake is going to pleasing to the palette ~ a win-win situation, right? Well almost right, don't assume that because the cake is edible and the caterers are handling the food, that automatically makes them responsible for cutting & serving the cake. Now, most catering companies are more than glad to assist you with this detail but there is normally a cake cutting fee and the Day-Of is not the time to discover this information.

2. Candy & Dessert Bars are a BIG thing now; heck, I'm having one at the babyshower.... You come across lots of decadent edibles to display and are sure that it's going to win the crowd over. Before we get to the visual, there is usually the task of setting up the bar; have you informed your Day-Of-Manager of your intent and has she/he agreed to take on that responsibility or have you mentioned this to the caterer and she/he agreed to this task? This may seem like a small detail but on your event day, when schedules have been composed in advance and every second counts, this one mission can throw a huge curveball in the set-up process. The display should not only be pleasing to the eye but how the desserts should be cared for, will determine how far off of schedule it puts your vendor.

3. Place Cards are an element that really dress up an event.... I LOVE EM! It can be a daunting task, to say the least but well worth it when you look out and see your guests engaging and comfortable with those surrounding them. Google, has become a D.I.Y'ers paradise when it comes to finding templates and designs for stationary products. Make sure you get confirmation from the party that is taking on the task of setting up your place card station. Normally, this is a detail that is handled by your wedding professional but if you have opted to D.I.Y. that professional needs to know and has to agree to take on the task. You simply cannot add projects to a vendors case load, after a contract has been negotiated and signed....no matter how simply or mundane you feel the task is.

Harlem Renaissance Themed Wedding

Congratulations to Brittney & Jeffrey Sterette, who were married on 6/13/2010. This couple was a pleasure to work with and the theme of their wedding made planning and designing both interesting and educational.

A beautiful garden ceremony, overlooking the National Harbor; filled with sheer fabric accompanied by long stemmed callas, a violinist and 120 friends & family sharing in this nuptial celebration.

A cocktail hour by the reflection pool, gave the guest comfort to beat the summer heat ~ that we were blessed with :)

The reception was in full swing with a jazz ensemble, that took guests back in time and the literary flowering that fostered this cultural identity was implemented throughout the design. Tables were named for famous venues of the era, place cards were accented with peacock feathers and programs, in the form of headliners instructed guests of the "venue" in which they would attend.

The San Francisco Experience ~ Part I

All work and no play, makes for a dull trip (that's if you call sampling a selection of cuisine, dull). Since I arrived on the West Coast a few days before my scheduled event, I decided to explore San Francisco and visit a few places that were not on my scheduled tour. I set out on a very windy but pleasant Sunday morning and decided to let my nose guide me to brunch, it led me straight to Pier 39. What a view ~ The Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, over 112 stores and YES, plenty of food. After a filling brunch of Dungeness Crab & Shrimp at The Crab House, I was up for a much needed walk to tour the city and to walk off the huge lunch that I had consumed.

I headed over to Ghirardelli Square. Yup, named after the famous chocolatier!

MY FIRST STOP:

Welcome to the Crown & Crumpet Tea Salon, a stylish room with tea and wit, in fabulous Ghirardelli Square. The delicious food and libations will transport you to a classic, traditional tea salon, but the stylish and vibrant décor tells you this is not a stuffy, Victoriana "olde tea shoppe.”
I found this tea salon so adorable, with bright vibrant colors, a perfect view of the Golden Gate and Amy (one of the owners) made me feel right at home. I sampled a variety of teas and even walked away with a few blends that are made just right for the
"Mother-To-Be".

MY SECOND STOP An artisan bakery that emphasizes the use of organic products and voted best cupcakes in San Francisco, Kara's Cupcakes features an array of mouthwatering treats.

MY LAST STOP:Ghirardelli Ice Cream & Chocolate Shop, home of the original Ghirardelli Chocolate Square Candies. Ghirardelli's has built on its signature taste to become America’s premium chocolate company. My Assistant Gail, from Gail's Gala Events LOVES these square pleasures, so I decided to surprise her and pick up a few of these San Francisco originals (more on what happened to the chocolates later).

With my "Mommy Tea", organic cupcakes and bag of Ghirardelli's Squares in hand, I left the aromatic confines of Ghirardelli Sqaure to see what else San Francisco had in store for me. After a few "traditional" stops to capture the essence of the city on camera, I was ready for a much needed nap.

I feel so fortunate to be one of the Event Professional's attending The Essence Tour & Tasting in San Franciso, CA. So, I'm packing my bags and flying the "friendly skies".

This weekened, I'll have the opportunity to explore the flavor profile of hand selected wines, unveiling the mysteries of aromatic essences commonly associated with red and white wines such as green apple, leather, peach, smoke, pineapple, berries or oak. The tour focuses on the influences of soil, climate, and the artful hand of the winemaker. By the way, my Obstetrician gave me the thumbs up with tasting red wine, in moderation of course. A little red wine does wonders for the heart and blood stream, both baby and mine.

San Francisco is at the center of the new wave of artisan chocolatiers. They're experimenting with high quality beans, new methods of production, exotic fillings and breathtaking packaging. It's here that I will learn what makes fine chocolate and get to sample from a wide array of San Francisco gourmet chocolate boutiques....Yum, I can just smell the cocoa beans now!!

What could be better than a day of gourmet chocolate? Tasting that chocolate next to a perfectly matched glass of wine, of course. This Gourmet Chocolate and Wine Tour will train my taste palate on the unique pairings of some of the world's best chocolates and wine combinations.

Open The Cake & Cookie Closet

I love my job as an Event/Wedding Professional, there are so many perks to this demanding career. One of the highlights...menu & dessert samplings. While this may not sound like the best option, if you're worried about keeping off those pesky 5 pounds that somehow continue to sneak their way onto you; it allows one to experience and totally emerse themselves in new flavors, cultures and a myriad of other details. To be quite frank, now that I'm 5 months pregnant, tastings have become my favorite task, during the planning process :) So naturally, when I received a very colorful invite to peek inside of an edible closet, I jumped at the chance!

These answers were given by 2nd grade school children to the following questions:
Why did God make mothers?
1. She's the only one who knows where the sticky tape is.
2. Mostly to clean the house.
3. To help us out of there when we were getting born.

Why did God give you your mother and not some other mom?
1. We're related.
2. God knew she likes me a lot more than other people's moms like me.

What did Mom need to know about Dad before she married him?
1. His last name.
2. She had to know his background. Like is he a crook? Does he get drunk on beer?
3. Does he make at least $800 a year? Did he say NO to drugs and YES to chores?

Who's the boss at your house?
1. Mom doesn't want to be boss, but she has to because Dad's such an idiot.
2. Mom . You can tell by room inspection. She sees the stuff under the bed.
3. I guess mom is, but only because she has a lot more to do than Dad.

1. On the inside she's already perfect. Outside, I think some kind of plastic surgery.

Weekend weddings have become sort of the norm now. With family & friends stretched all over the globe, it’s kinda hard to play catch up with everyone during a four-hour reception, on what is one~ if not thee most important event of you life.

Now one might say, “What could I offer my guests in the city of Baltimore?” Let’s not be fooled!

I had guests calling, not to inform or confirm lodging and travel accommodations but to find out where they could eat CRABS. Since the main focus, besides the wedding that is, of all the out-of-town guests seemed to be CRABS, I suggested an informal crab feast.

I had the pleasure of taking one of Maryland’s favorite summer past times and turning it into an edible course- -“The Art of Cleaning & Correctly Eating Crabs”. That’s right, you’d be surprised how many non-Marylanders are oblivious as to how to really enjoy these delectable little scavengers. What’s even more surprising is how many Marylanders are lost at sea (no pun intended), when it come to these blue babies.

Well folks, let’s just say that this event went over so well that the Sunday departure brunch that had been anticipated by everyone, especially the Groom---a true southern gentleman that loves his shrimp and grits; had to be altered a wee bit to accommodate the new guests of honor, you guessed it…CRABS.

All in all it was a loud of fun. The lesson here…. Don’t worry if your weekend wedding ideas are not those of tea and sandwiches for the ladies or golf and cigars for the men, do what comes naturally.

1.If basketball or flag football is a shared favorite, have a family tournament
2.Wine tasting during brunch, Rum sampling during a dinner
3.Gather everyone on Friday evening for a quick Salsa lesson

What ever your fancy, don’t count Baltimore out yet.

R.S.V.P. ~ Pleeease!

Everyone loves a lazy weekend afternoon. You arrive home from running the morning's errands, church or maybe you've decided to sleep in on this particular day; whatever it is that you choose to do, you would normally have an idea of the movie(s) in which you'll view, snacks that you would want to eat and what time you will decide to turn the ring volume back up on the telephone. You settle into your leisure day of relaxation and get that un-expected knock at the door. While we all love of family members and value our friends, don't you just detest when that happens? Now, you may say, "I would not answer my door or telephone" but at a wedding ceremony and reception, one cannot bar the entrance into the room.

R.S.V.P. - not just fancy letters that appear on correspondences because we enjoy making life difficult for guests. Those very important letters are there to ensure that everyone is accounted for---- a place to sit and a meal & beverages to enjoy. Don't take for granted that because you are a relative of the Bride or Groom, they were guests at your wedding or because they sent an invitation so they must know that you're going to attend. When the couple begins to combine and total their lists, they are not going to sit and search for those, near and dear, that are sure to attended but did not return the response card. Now as much as the couple would love to include you and your guest in the celebration, if you did not return the card or at least place a telephone call, then it is assumed that you are declining the invite.

Make it easier on everyone involved- return the card, get decked out and let's all have a good time.

Follow The Leader

After speaking with several of my colleagues around the Baltimore area it also became clear that we all have, at one point or another, been asked by a tardy guest, "Why can't we sit in the front, I see a place, to sit, right there?” Please don't become angry with the Hostess, Usher and or Wedding Professional because you are informed that you may not sit in the very front; guests are seated as they arrive and so goes the old saying, "The early bird gets the worm". Everyone in attendance should be seated prior to the processional. Should circumstances arise that cause you to arrive late and you just happen to get lucky, finding someone that will let you quietly enter the rear of the site or the balcony, grasp the opportunity and enjoy what's left of the ceremony. Do not walk pass the person at the door and take the seat that you feel you are entitled to.

Many of us (Wedding Planners) spend our progress meetings advising lucky couples and their parent's on the proper etiquette to coincide with the formality of the event. After a number of weddings & events this spring, and a number of events to follow this summer, it finally occurred to me, "The guests need a little advice of their own".

A Matter of Time

Ladies & Gentlemen~ Regardless of knowledge you may have gained via word of mouth and or what your past experiences may have been... Don't assume that all weddings are going to begin late. I don't know how many times, in the past three-four months, I've heard, "They're done already?" or "I went through all this for nothing!" Uh, here's a word to the wise----BE ON TIME. The time that appears on your invite has been selected by the couple and confirmed by various vendors. The couple has based all of that day's pre & post events around the time that is engraved on the invitation. A delay in the ceremony can cause a potential domino effect with other wedding events, thus costing hundreds of extra dollars needed to compensate service providers for extending contracts.

We're now in the world of Facebook, Twitter, Blogging and the list goes on and on..... many of my colleagues, clients and potential clients alike will email me with basic questions or just to get my thoughts on one aspect or another. Sometimes, I like to get up close and personal~I have opted NOT to utilize this as a blog, although it has the blog setting, but more like a peek at my various thoughts of the day. I'll post in the form of a Q & A/FAQ or whatever may come to mind that I feel would benefit anyone in the "Event" arena.

My career as a wedding and event professional requires a great deal of dedication and passion. Planning memorable weddings and events require not only creativity and a sense of style, but excellent business, interpersonal and organizational skills. Before you get to that beautiful wedding day, you must spend many hours planning, preparing and coordinating each and every detail, negotiating with vendors, dealing with your clients and their families, as well as gracefully handling every twist and turn you may encounter along the way. It is a demanding career choice, but one with great rewards and I do it all while wearing stilettos!
